Anyone Want a Cake?

So I've decided that as long as I make at least 1 cake a month, I'm doing pretty good with this whole "learn how to make cakes" business. But this month, I am drawing a blank, so I decided to come up with a post to see if anyone wants me to make them a cake.

Cake-making is SUPER fun but I run into the problem of paying SO much for the ingredients that go into them! Therefore, I'll make anyone a cake for free as long as they provide the money for the ingredients. No big deal right? Each cake I have made has taken me about 8+ hours to make, so I will be doing all the labor for free. You get a cheap custom cake- I get to make it and have fun. It's a win-win situation!

So if you want me to make you a cake let me know. I will do ANYTHING you want!!!

I Hate Cookies...

Alright. Apparently, John and I are terrible at decorating cookies. Terrible. So bad, I almost didn't post them on here because I didn't want anyone to think, "Gah, those cookies look terrible!" But, I'm posting them. Please don't judge (haha).

I could post that this was all John's fault. After all, he is the only person I have pictures of actually doing anything to the cookies. But that would be wrong. It was the two of us who created this horrible mess. Notice the blue spots of icing covering the entire table. Notice the one on John's knee. It was bad...

This photo is for the people who will say, "Oh, they weren't that bad..."
Grimace. Yes they were.

This picture is for the people who said, "Oh, you were right...
Don't ever do cookies again!!" Shush up- they weren't THAT bad... :)

Regardless of how you feel about the cookies, I will tell you one thing- I probably will not be trying them again. Or maybe I will. At least I know they can't get worse than they already are.

Until next time...

John's Birthday

Okay! Finally, another cake to upload! I apologize in advance that the photos are a bit blurry but here is John's Birthday cake!

It is made out of yellow cake with chocolate icing. Decorations are made out of fondant and buttercream icing. Hope y'all enjoy!

The cake before any decorations were put on it.

John is added. He looks a little chubby cause the
fondant got affected by gravity. Oops!

River rocks!

Almost done...

The finished cake!

Close up

He was really suprised!

Me and John with his cake! Love you hun!

Now that John's birthday is over, I'm not sure what my next project will be. I'll probably make some cookies or something for Valentine's Day. Other than that, I'm not sure. If you have an idea (a birthday perhaps) let me know- maybe I'll make a cake for YOU!

No Cakes Yet...

Sorry all. I haven't made another cake yet but don't worry- I've got one that I'm planning in my mind for John's 23rd Birthday! I would write about my ideas on here but I don't want him to find out what it's going to look like, so check back around February 3rd (day after his birthday) for pictures of my next cake!

I can't wait!

First Attempt

Well, it's time for me to share with you my first cake EVER. I'm so thrilled with how it turned out (I made it for my mom's birthday). Hope you enjoy the pictures of John and I making this pink concoction!

Here was our inspiration.

The flowers...

John likes the icing!

And here is the finished result! We are so proud of it!

The end.

What Would You Do If I Got All Fat & Buttered Up?

Last night John and I decided to experiment with some icing recipes since we are planning on making our first cake for my mom's birthday on Monday. We chose a recipe from The Confetti Cakes Cookbook.

Here is the icing, chilling out in the fridge.
It looks more like coleslaw but it tastes AWESOME!

Inspired by last night's experiments, today I decided to work a little bit more on icing techniques. Here is a photo of some of the piping I did. It took me a few tries to get it right, but I'm pretty satisfied with the overall look.

Shell, shell, shell...

Finally, after working really hard on a lot of different borders and stuff, I decided to really push myself and see if I could make a Wilton Rose. I didn't expect to be able to do it, but here is the final product:

I LOVE MY FLOWER!!

I made one more just to make sure it hadn't been a fluke.
Tada! Flowers for two!

And, in case you were wondering what the title for this post was all about, last night I asked John what he would do if I got all fat and buttered up like the buttercream icing we made last night. His answer? "Whip you back into shape!"

Haha. Funny.

How It All Began

I'm sure many of you have heard of the Julie/Julia Project, in which a young woman makes a commitment to make Julia Child's recipes and blog about them. Being the "creative" girl I am, I decided to do the same thing, but with a slight spin. I want to make cakes. So, this blog is about me, Kati, learning to make cakes - a journey I'm sure will be not nearly as easy as I am anticipating...

Kati's Cake Project had a simple beginning. It all started when I, Kati, was watching my favorite TV channel, TLC. I happened upon the show Cake Boss, one of the shows I love, when I started thinking to myself that I could do that.

Here is the picture of the cast of Cake Boss. Buddy (center) is the star of the show.

I don't know if you've ever seen the show or not. Basically, it's about a family living in New York who own a cake bakery called Carlo's Bake Shop. The show consists of crazy cake orders and the chaos it takes to make the cakes in the show.

So I starting doing some research online and found lots of cakes that I thought I could probably make. Since it was getting close to Christmas, I decided to put some of the stuff I had found (books, classes, gear) on my Wish List.

Christmas day, my beloved boyfriend, John, came over with a big box. I expected it to be a watch hidden in the box so I would be tricked, but when I opened it, I found an assortment of cake decorating things. John said he couldn't find a beginners set, so he made his own. Here is a picture of it:

A few days passed, and now I have started practicing. It's not great but here is what I did so far. Keep in mind please that I have never decorated a cake (at least, not to make it look good. I've added sprinkles to stuff before...)

Obviously I'm not very good at the bows...

Anyway, I guess I'll practice more later. I've got to get some different tips so I can move on to my next practice sheet!

Happy New Year!
